A Delegation from the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences Visited RWTH Aachen University

On September 6, 2019, Dr. Shaohua Chen, deputy director of the Institute of Urban Environment (IUE), Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dr. Xin Ye visited the Institute for Environmental Research (ESA) and the Institute of Environmental Engineering (ISA), RWTH Aachen University. This visit was supported by the joint research platform of the Sino-German Water and Health Research Center (WATCH).

Dr. Xin Ye gave a presentation on “Fluidized struvite crystallization: From experiment, modeling to application” at ESA. He and the participants had a warm discussion on the situation of phosphorus recycling in China and Germany. Dr. Sebastian Heger and Dr. Hongxia Xiao showed the ESA laboratory to the IUE guests. In the afternoon, the delegation visited the ISA led by the head of laboratory, Dr. Linnemann, who introduced the chemical analysis equipment and technologies at ISA. The two sides had an in-depth discussion on their research activities.

After that, the delegation visited the Aachen Wastewater Treatment Plant. Mr. Zobel, the plant manager, gave the participants a detailed introduction to the development, current status, and outlook of the wastewater treatment plant. He also took the guests to the largest four-stage municipal wastewater treatment plant with ozone in Europe. At the end of the visit, all the participants agreed that further cooperation and exchange between IUE and RWTH Aachen University are promising.
